Duty, Honor, Country

We had a very short cruise to Newburg, NY today. The marina is fronted by several small, charming restaurants with sundecks and festive umbrellas.

We had lunch at a little Panini place – the food was wonderful, light and fresh and the service was perfection. After lunch we took a taxi to The United States Military Academy at West Point. The academy sits on scenic high ground overlooking the Hudson River, 50 miles north of New York City. The entire central campus is a national landmark and home to scores of historic sites, buildings, and monuments. We took a guided tour and learned some of the history beginning with the Revolutionary War, through to the Civil War and Custer’s (trained at West Point) last stand at Little Bighorn. It is a vast and beautiful campus with interesting history and current academic/military leadership training. The entire first part of the tour was in the cemetary and their was much talk of death (which I thought was appropriate as that's the most consistent thing about war). Interestingly, most leaders on both sides of the Civil War were trained at West Point - highly trained military strategists - and it is theorized that this is mostly why it was such a long and bloody war.

Jeff treated us to Father’s Day dinner at a restaurant on the waterfront then we went to the Billy Joe's Ribworks which was 100 feet away from where we were docked. It was a giant place with several large open areas around a central bar and a live band was warming up. They warmed up, and strummed their electric guitars, did “test, one, two, test…” literally for 45 minutes. John and I couldn’t take it anymore so retired to the boat and Jeff and Leann stuck it out. Of course, we were able to listen to the band anyway as we were so close. We were actually worried we wouldn’t be able to sleep with the noise. However, if there is one thing John and I have a very similar level of expertise in, it is sleeping soundly. We are so good at it, it amazes me – and we slept until 6:30 and didn’t even hear the kids come back aboard!
